Is it a lipstick or a lipgloss??

It’s a lip creme actually! I’m talking about the new Soft Matte Lip Cremes from NYX Cosmetics.  This is the last part of my mini haul.  These products came out earlier this year and there has been a lot of buzz surrounding these.  The Lip Cremes come in packaging similar to the typical lip gloss with matte, rubberized caps and the doe foot applicator.  The lip cremes are supposed to be more pigmented than a lip gloss but more moisturizing than a matte lipstick.  These come in 11 colours and I paid $4.50 each from beautyjoint.com.  What a steal!  These products are similar to the Stila Long Wear Liquid Lip Color.

I purchased 3 colours:

The first is London

Swatch, London

London is a pinky, beige nude colour.  This would work as a good nude for those with medium skintones.  It applied very creamy and had a sheen, but quickly dried down to a matte texture.  This is not the most heavily pigmented and I think you would have to add a few layers to get full opaque coverage, which could be a good thing depending on the look that you are going for.  London runs a little cool, so that I would pair this with a brown lipliner to warm this up.  As I said before, this dries down to a matte finish, which means it has not shine or shimmer.  This makes your lips pretty dry, so I would also prep with some lip balm.

Next up is Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a bright, strawberry red.  Again, I would apply a couple of layers to get full coverage.  You could wear this with either a red lip liner, or a dark burgandy one.  This runs a little cool as well.  I actually think that this is quite a wearable red! Since it can be layered, I think it’s a good option for those who want to wear red lips, but need to take baby steps.  This will look good on many skintones, from light to dark.

Finally, there is Monte Carlo

This is my favourite of the three! A dark, burgundy red.  Similar in texture to the other two colours.  I would wear this with a burgundy liner like M.A.C. Current or even Nightmoth.  I have had the opportunity to wear this colour and it was going strong after 5 hours but I removed it afterwards, so it appears to be quite long lasting.  Very nice colour!

Here is the side-by-side swatch of Amsterdam and Monte Carlo.

And here is a comparison with NYX’s Matte Lipstick in Merlot, which I reviewed previously:

So overall, I like these lip products, I think they are a great value for the price, but I do think that the Stila product is better, but these are still really good.  They are available online from NYX Cosmetics or beautyjoint.com and is available internationally from beautyjoint.

Overall Grade: B+/A-
