Earth Day beauties!

Hey!

So last Friday was Earth Day, and slowly but surely, lots of cosmetic companies, big and small, have been embracing more natural and organic formulations.  So for you earth-conscious beauties out there, here are a few brands to look out for:

HAIR

  • Oyin Handmade – probably my favourite, natural haircare line for women with curly, kinky or coily hair.  I cannot live without the Burnt Sugar Pomade.  Really.  The Juices are also really good too! Still have to try their new Hair Dew.
  • Karen’s Body Beautiful – Another great line based out of my old neighbourhood of Fort Greene Brooklyn.  The Sweet Ambrosia is the go-to product.  But I am really excited for all the new products that will be coming out this year.
  • Qhemet Biologics – I think that their Amla and Olive Heavy Cream is amazing! It’s also their top seller.
  • Kinky Curly –  A very popular brand with products like Knot Today (my staple leave-in conditioner) and the Curling Custard (which I have YET to try, but summer is coming up so….).
  • Anita Grant – love from across the pond!!! And now they have a U.S. distributor – Hairrogant.  And right now they actually have a sale on the top 5 selling AG products!  I would recommend the babassu shampoo bars and the Rhassoul Deep Condish.
  • Aubrey Organics– available at Whole Foods and other retailers, I use their GPB conditioner as a protein conditioner and the Honeysuckle Rose conditioner as a deep moisturizer.
  • SheaMoisture – Love their Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo and their body butters! Available at Target and Walgreens.

Punchy colours for NARS summer 2011

So the summer collections keep rolling in!  NARS brings together turquoises and guavas for their summer offering.

According to NARS:

The Summer 2011 collection is a range of warm, sophisticated, shimmering shades, punctuated with shots of vivid, nature-defying color. Eyes are washed in icy sea foam, silver-green and frozen turquoise. Lips are infused with mandarin orange gloss and hot pink matte color. The look is finished with nails in bold sunflower yellow or matte opaque white for a modern, edgy effect that’s strictly NARS.

IMATS, IMATS, IMATS NYC!!

That’s pretty much what I said when I heard that the International Makeup Artist Tradeshow (IMATS) was finally coming to NYC in 2011.  In L.A. and Toronto, it is usually a must-go event and I was excited! I love going to these shows for a number of reasons,

  1. I get shop a lot of different makeup brands, especially those that are usually online only, at a discount.
  2. I get to meet fellow bloggers and vloggers that I ‘stalk’ on a daily basis
  3. And…I get to take classes taught by some of my favourite celebrity makeup masters.

So I attended last Sunday, which ended up being a great idea as I heard that it was just chaos on Saturday.  I got to SoHo early so I was able to browse the booths with ease.  Even though the show was hosted on multiple levels, there were less vendors than I expected.  There were many of the most popular brands that were not there like M.A.C. and Make Up For Ever.  I think that the organizers played it conservatively and limited the number of attendees and vendors.

I had a short shopping list and as soon as I get there, I headed to those specific booths.  Here’s my mini haul!

Dances For Venus photoshoot

Hey!

A few weeks ago (actually it was around Valentine’s Day), I had the opportunity to work with Jannelle on a photoshoot to create a poster for her Valentine’s Day belly dance show.  I did her makeup and costume styling.  We wanted to keep the look very ethereal and soft as the show was a tribute to beauty and amazingness of women.

The costume was stunning!!! Huge tuille skirt, off-white satin top with crystal chains draped across the top.  I loved this look!  Of course it was very sexy but at the same time very goddess-like and almost angelic. Costume came from Bellydance America.

For the makeup, I wanted the look to still be arabic, but I did not want any harsh lines.  The look needed to be soft with a hint of colour to provide some contrast with all the white.  I used a light champagne-brown pigment (M.A.C. Cocomotion pigment) with MUFE’s # 58 applied to the outer corner of the eye.  This was soft, light application of #58 using M.A.C.’s # 224 brush.  Created a tight line of black eyeliner very close to the lashline, and winged out slightly.  I lined the lower lashline only halfway, then added lots of mascara.  This created a softened version of the khol-lined eyes that Middle Eastern women have made famous.  I applied M.A.C. Face and Body foundation in C4.  This gave a light, air-brushed finished that I loved.  On the cheeks, I used NARS Crazed blush.  For the lips, I used Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip  Tar in Demure, which is a fuchsia pink with purple.  I mixed the lip tar with M.A.C.’s clear lip glass.

Here’s the final look!
