How to easily exfoliate dry skin: Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel

I have really dry skin.  Sometimes it flakes and if I don’t treat my skin the night before, I wake up with tightness across my cheeks.  So I am always looking for ways to hydrate, brighten and fight off dullness.  This is where acids come in. Specifically alpha hydroxy acids or AHAs. A few years ago, I tried the Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Extra Strength Daily Peel and I have not looked back.

Human skin naturally contains different acids, including on the very top layer of the epidermis. These acids help the old, dead skin cells shed revealing newer ones.  As we age, this process of the cycling of skin cells slow down often making the skin look dull and flaky.  AHAs specifically works on the top layer of the skin, while beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) work into the pores of the skin breaking down the lipids that can lead to enlarged pores, acne, blackheads and whiteheads.  I much prefer chemical exfoliation as using physical exfoliation can leave micro tears in the skin.

Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel – Description

The Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel comes in two strengths, original and extra strength.  In this review, I will be talking about the extra strength but I have used the regular version for a long while and my feelings are exactly the same.  I picked up the 5 Treatment package but they are also available in 30 Treatment and 60 Treatment versions.

This is a 2-step process and is meant to be used on a daily basis.  This exfoliates and treats the skin with anti-aging ingredients.  It is also cruelty-free, vegan and free of parabens and pthtalates. Both steps are used in the same session, so you are not going to receive the full benefits if you use just one of the steps.  Step 1 which is the exfoliating/smoothing step contains a number of AHAs including Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, Mandelic Acid, Malic Acid and Citric Acid and the BHA Salicylic Acid.  That’s a lot of acids but I don’t know what the overall total concentration is.  There are also extracts and other ingredients like Copper PCA that help soothe and hydrate the skin.  The second step, which neutralizes and is anti-aging, contains retinoids like retinol and retinyl palmitate – powerful anti-aging ingredients.  There is also different forms of Vitamin C and E, ubiquinone, which are anti-oxidants and help brighten the skin and more soothing agents in the form of extracts.  The combination of these acids and retinoids have the possibility of causing irritation, especially in the extra-strength concentration.  Definitely start off slowly and pace yourself – use once or twice a week and start off with the gentler version.

The 3 best Paula’s Choice anti-aging products you should use

I have been using Paula’s Choice products for a few years now. I have even gotten my Mum hooked on some of her products too! I am always drawn to well-thought out, well researched skincare brands that rely on hard science when making their formulations. Paula Begoun is one of the better known skincare experts in the cosmeceuticals industry. I like that her products have simple ingredient listings i.e. there are not a lot of ‘filler’ ingredients, added fragrance and are made for use by people with skin sensitivities. She also gives you ingredients that are in high enough concentrations to be effective. The last thing that is pretty unique about PC, is that she includes published research from medical journals that support her decisions for using particular active ingredients.

This product has a very watery consistency with a distinctive citrus smell and a very pale yellow/orange tint. I apply it directly to skin after toning but it can also be added to your moisturiser. It comes in UV safe packaging. Once your product has deepened in shade, it is time to be thrown out. I use this right after cleansing and toning in the morning.

Active Ingredients: L-Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C)

L-Ascorbic Acid is found in multiple levels in the skin and is vital for the production of collagen. This is how Vitamin C is helpful in the reduction of the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also attacks the oxidants (free-radicals) that damage the structure of skin which also causes wrinkles.

Vitamin C is also protects against the damage from UV exposure. It attacks the free radicals that are activated by sun exposure therefore it protects the skin and it also prevents photo-damage, which includes overproduction of melanin. This leads to brightening of the skin (not whitening) and it had help those with hyperpigmentation.
