Recent nail polish haul: OCC & Zoya

Good day!

I have taken advantage of some recent sales and collected a few more nail polishes to add to my arsenal.  I got some stuff from Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics and Zoya.  Both are vegan lines, by the way.

Extravaganza by OCC

Swatch, Extravaganza

Extravaganza is part of OCC’s Fall 2011 collection, Pretty Boy.  I think for autumn, it is an unusual colour as it reminds me of summer, but it is warm somewhere in the world, isn’t it? LOL! Extravaganza is a pinkish-coral with  green-gold duochrome microshimmer.  This was one of the stand out colours from this collection, I love it.  It is bright but not neon and I think that it works well for women with darker skin as well as ladies with lighter complexion.  Finally I think that this colour is pretty neutral, not to warm or too cool.  I needed at least 2 coats for this one.  The formula is on the thinner side and not too streaky.

Earth Day beauties!

Hey!

So last Friday was Earth Day, and slowly but surely, lots of cosmetic companies, big and small, have been embracing more natural and organic formulations.  So for you earth-conscious beauties out there, here are a few brands to look out for:

HAIR

  • Oyin Handmade – probably my favourite, natural haircare line for women with curly, kinky or coily hair.  I cannot live without the Burnt Sugar Pomade.  Really.  The Juices are also really good too! Still have to try their new Hair Dew.
  • Karen’s Body Beautiful – Another great line based out of my old neighbourhood of Fort Greene Brooklyn.  The Sweet Ambrosia is the go-to product.  But I am really excited for all the new products that will be coming out this year.
  • Qhemet Biologics – I think that their Amla and Olive Heavy Cream is amazing! It’s also their top seller.
  • Kinky Curly –  A very popular brand with products like Knot Today (my staple leave-in conditioner) and the Curling Custard (which I have YET to try, but summer is coming up so….).
  • Anita Grant – love from across the pond!!! And now they have a U.S. distributor – Hairrogant.  And right now they actually have a sale on the top 5 selling AG products!  I would recommend the babassu shampoo bars and the Rhassoul Deep Condish.
  • Aubrey Organics– available at Whole Foods and other retailers, I use their GPB conditioner as a protein conditioner and the Honeysuckle Rose conditioner as a deep moisturizer.
  • SheaMoisture – Love their Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo and their body butters! Available at Target and Walgreens.

What makes your heart THROB??

Illamasqua has been on my radar for a while now and I will definitely be partaking of some of their goodies this year! Haven’t heard of them?  They are a London-based cosmetics line and their slogan is: “Make-up for your alter ego”.  They have enjoyed a rapid assent globally since they started out in 2008, especially since they started selling in the U.S. at Sephora.  They are on par with M.A.C. and Make Up For Ever, in terms of having products suitable for stage and for screen.  I am actually attracted to their line as they feature a lot of bold, intense colours that work quite well with tan to dark skintones.  Based on the reviews that I have read, they appear to make good products, with great formulas and colour payoffs.  I like that they don’t go for the super safe neutral looks, which in itself is fine, but sometimes you want something more daring, more mysterious or playful! Really feeding your alter ego!

So just in time for Valentine’s Day, Illamasqua has come out with the THROB Collection and I just love the promo images.
