As the bounderies between professional makeup lines and regular consumer makeup lines continue to blur, there are tons of options available for the beginning makeup wearer, but where do you start??  It seems like everyone is jumping into the makeup game, providing a vast array of colours, textures and tools to play with.  Over the next few days, I’ll be giving my tips for very basic makeup, the-no-fuss, I’ve got 5 mins, but I want to look polished- look.

Makeup is all about experimentation, taking your time to figure out what you like and what works for you, looking at what other people use.  YouTube and beauty blogs are a modern woman’s best friend.  I spend countless hours roaming YouTube, learning new techniques, looking at product reviews and makeup tutorials.  More importantly, makeup should be fun! 🙂 Ah mean, what’s the point if it makes you miserable??  It should never be stressful or agonizing.  If you make a mistake…just wipe it off – and save that receipt.  Many beauty retailers allow you make returns within a certain timeframe.

Ok, enough talk, on to the real stuff!!!

The Skin

No matter how many colours you use, how great your blending skills are, the brands you buy, it will be all for naught if you don’t have good looking skin.  Take care of the skin on your body, especially on your face.  Use gentle cleansers appropriate for your skin type, don’t over exfoliate and always moisturize. Treat your skin for acne as needed.  Keep your hands off of your face.

I have normal to dry skin and I don’t break out.  I wash my face once a day, at night.  I’ve been using Skyn Iceland Glacial Face Wash with Biospheric Complex. It’s a natural product, made without sulphates etc. that’s gentle, leaves a minty feeling and does not strip my skin.  Yes it’s $30 but seriously it lasts a year.  A little goes a long way so it’s worth it in the end.  I get this at Sephora.

I have dark skin, partially from running in the hot Caribbean sun as a child, and I wear moisturizer with sunscreen every single day! It’s all about protecting your skin!  I have tried a lot of products with SPF but most of them either made me look super ashy or I had an allergic reaction.  Currently I am using LaRoche-Posey’s Anthelios SX Daily Moisturizer with SPF 15.  This is one of the first products that come out in the US containing Meroxyl.  I really like this product, keeps me well moisturized even in really cold weather but does not melt in the hot sun.  I get this at my local drugstore.

Once you’ve cleansed and moisturized your skin, you are well on your way to your out-of-the-door look!

I’ll be back soon with more tips!!
