Happy New Year!!! I hope that you have been enjoying 2017 so far! I have been more mindful to enjoy life a little bit more in this new year. More self-care, appreciation of life, and to be more bold. With that, I want to take a look back at all the best beauty products that I loved in 2016. These were my must-haves and I constantly repurchased them and will continue to remain in heavy rotation.

Another year, another amazing event! The Makeup Show NYC just ended a few weeks ago and what an event it was! I love going to this! This pro-only trade show is an amazing opportunity to meet other professionals in the makeup artistry industry as well as many of the brands that have been supporting professional artists for years. There are a number of things that I loved about this event this year:
Things I loved
The amazing educational classes – this is a wealth of information and it was a great event to learn about the current and upcoming trends – not just what is popular on YouTube, but what artist are doing in editorial, bridal and SFX.
The focus on skincare – Skin is in! Without an amazing canvas/base, you won’t have an amazing finished product! Makeup does not cover everything.
New and exciting product innovation and launches – Folks out there are really doing some incredible things with makeup and tools! The next few months will be super exciting, especially when it comes to mascaras…so many to try from Ardency Inn, tarte, Senna, Charlotte Tilbury etc! Just wait to see what MUFE has coming this summer!
Embracing smaller brands – this is cool…there were a number of small entrepreneurial companies featured at TMS, who are doing their own thing to shake up the industry, proving that you don’t have to be a global conglomerate to make a difference, which leads me to my last point…
The acknowledgement of the need or the necessity of the industry to fully embrace diversity – It is 2016 and many makeup artists still don’t carry around a kit catering to global skin tones and many companies still find it difficult to create properly balanced foundations for people of colour. Thanks to James Vincent, director of Artistry, for leading an amazing panel. Also thanks to the organizers of TMS for bringing on so many, lesser known brands founded by people of colour! I was especially excited seeing The Lip Bar. More on them in a later post!
Anyway, here are some photos of the artistry, the colour and the beauty of makeup. As usual, the body painting was phenomenal! Let me know what you think! I will be talking, in future posts, about some of the new goodies that I discovered while there…..get hyped!

A few days ago, word dropped that the Bajan bombshell, Rihanna, was collaborating with the Kendo division to bring out an entire makeup collection! A Rihanna makeup collection! Kendo is part of the LVMH Moët Hennesy Louis Vuitton and I can’t wait for this! You KNOW it is going to be person of colour friendly! Oh!!! Slay RiRi! Remember when she had a capsule collection with M.A.C. – the Retro Mattes in that one are still one of my favourites of all time! Anyway, we have a while to wait for this as it is not due to come out until the autumn of 2017. Those teaser pics will be epic!
The Details
From WWD:
The Kendo division of LVMH Moët Hennesy Louis Vuitton has landed a deal with Rihanna, one of the hottest-selling celebrities in the world of licensing, to do a complete makeup collection.
As one veteran cosmetics executive observed, “everything with her is off the charts.”
Estimates of what LVMH may have paid to make the deal run as high as $10 million.
Kendo, which functions as an incubator producing products that end up being retailed by LVMH’s Sephora perfumery chain and other outposts, will launch a Rihanna makeup range, called Fenty Beauty by Rihanna, in the fall of 2017.
While the company provided no other details, David Suliteanu, chief executive officer of Kendo, was in a celebratory mood. “Fenty Beauty by Rihanna is a beauty rocket ship that will appeal to a huge and diverse global audience,” he said. “We are aiming for the stars.”
……
Kendo has given Rihanna the opportunity to play a key role in the development of her brand and the longevity of a long-term relationship.
This Carnival season in Trinidad & Tobago has been a very short one. From the day after Christmas to the Carnival Monday is about 6 weeks! So all the fetes and other cultural events jam up next to each other. Talk about hectic! So this is my Carnival makeup look for 2016.
Usually I take inspiration from a pretty mas costume from one of the bigger mas bands, but this time, I just kinda played it by ear and this is what I came up with!
Carnival 2016
Black and smokey gray rhinestones
Multi coloured and sized rhinestones
I wanted the sequins and rhinestones to be the centre of attention without too much makeup anywhere else. Also I incorporated some strategic highlighting of the skin, minimal foundation and a couple of lip options. There is usually so much going on with your costume – the head piece, beads, feathers etc. that I wanted the look to be super pretty.
Before starting, especially for Carnival, make sure to moisturise and add a really good SPF. The sun is usually blazing and wearing sequins will give you a funky tan if you do not protect your skin. Apply the SPF just before applying your foundation. A foundation that is water-resistant and contains SPF will also help. Finally make reapply sunscreen every couple of hours. This is why I suggest wearing minimal foundation.
