M.A.C. & Rodarte

So I was not going to post on this, but it has been blowing up all over the internet. This has been the source of a lot of drama and outrage for the past few days/weeks. It’s the M.A.C. collaboration with Rodarte that is coming out in mid-September. I’m going keep it brief here as many, many people have gone into this issue in depth. I’ll post links of some of the articles. I think it’s important to know about this especially since there has been a reaction from M.A.C.  So here goes…

M.A.C. usually does a couple of collaborations a year with designer – they’ve done DSquared, Emmanuel Ungaro, Alexander Mc Queen to name a few. This time around, they chose the design duo from Rodarte and created a collection based on their Fall/Winter ’10 offering. The ladies from Rodarte stated that they were inspired by a road trip they had taken through Texas.  It would have been all fine and dandy except the centre of their inspiration is the notorious border town of Juarez.  If you have never heard of Juarez, its a town on the Mexico side of the US-Mexico border where people are severely impovrished and women are brutalized.  There seems to be no law and most cases remain unsolved.  Google it.  It’s not a good story and Rodarte was apparently draw to the clothing of the female factory workers. Uhmm….right.

Then the images and the names of the products in the line came out and all hell broke loose! Folks were infuriated and quite rightly so, there were items called ‘Ghost Town’ and ‘Juarez’ and the main promo image was of the deathly pale female with darkened eyes, made to look dead.  People have been all over YouTube, Twitter, the blogosphere decrying and demanding that M.A.C. pull the collection.  So much so, after days of badgering, M.A.C. sent out a statement staying that they were going to rename the collection and donate some money to a charity in Juarez.

Oscars 2010!!!!!!

Mo'Nique at the 2010 Oscars

First off, biggest congrats to Mo’Nique for winning the Best Actress in a Supporting Role from the Academy!!!!!!! That is HUGE!!!!!!!

I think Mo looked really good and her makeup was flawless!!! But, it usually is……

Overall, I think that people played it safe at the biggest night for film, the Oscars.

My absolute favourite had to have been Zoe Saldana’s dress!!!!!! I love a purple and this one incorporated the ombre style similar to P!nk’s dress for the Grammys.  I ADORE IT!!!  It’s super glam!!  It’s fiyah and sexy and demure all at the same time.  And her makeup was very simple but she threw some fierce lashes to play up the shape of her eyes!!! This is by Givenchy Couture, Spring 2010.

Zoe Saldana, Avatar, GORGEOUS!!!!

Even the shoes are hot!

Love these lashes!!!

Here’s Nicole Richie in a sparkly backless number!!!! Her makeup was the best of the night.  Quite dramatic!!! This is from Reem Acra.

And I’m doing this look!!! It was fabulous using 2 popular features – dramatic cut-crease and a winged/cat-eye!! You could even incorporate colour into this look!!!! LOVE IT!

Cut crease and winged liner!!!

I love, love this red and cream dress worn by Katy Perry.  It’s sparkly, and fitted her perfectly!!!! Hot dress!

Ok, so this is the first time in…..FOREVER, that I love what Jennifer Hudson is wearing.  She looks amazing!!!!! I could see myself wearing this dress. I want it! It’s looks great on her!!!!! The cumberband-style gives her the perfect hourglass figure.  And the hair and makeup complements to dress well too!

The top of this dress is hot!

Vogue Italia makes waves again!!!

Italian Vogue has catapulted itself into the spotlight again! First it was with the all-Black issue of a few years ago, now they have launched 3 new websites, Vogue Black, Vogue Curvy and Vogue Talents.

Now the internets have been abuzz with the news of Vogue Black, which is supposed to shine a spotlight on black models past, present and future. Vogue Curvy is dedicated to all those greater than a size 2 and features hot plus-size model Crystal Renn. Vogue Talents keeps up on all the up and coming designers out there.

I for one am glad to see an international forum dedicated to the very, very talented black models gracing a few of the runways.  I would be even happier when race really does not matter and we could readily find models of all races gracing the cover of international magazines and runways around the world.  I am also interested in seeing a non-American perspective on race and beauty and the thoughts and issues that affect others in Europe and beyond.
