LOTD: Natural hair twistout

LOTD: Natural hair twistout

Hey!

Just a quick picture of my twistout.

2 Strand twistout

I keep my hair in a 2-strand twist about 95 % of the time.  It’s just easy.  But a few days before washing and deep conditioning, I take the twists out to allow my hair to breathe, rest, whatever.  I usually braid the roots and twist the rest of the hair.  As for products, right now I am using my ever faithful Oyin Handmade products and some other items.

Product Review: Have you tried Bee Hold Curly Butter?

Product Review: Have you tried Bee Hold Curly Butter?

Image courtesty of Bee Mine

This is one of the products that I have heard a lot of buzzz about from curly heads for years. Bee Hold Curly Butter is made by the company Bee Mine and it is probably their best selling product.  Always the first to sell out and I had to make sure I snapped it up.  I bought mine from Ecodermis & Wolfberry in Brooklyn (right off Eastern Parkway) and I got the last one!!

I’m sooooo excited!!! I attended last year for the first time in NYC and wrote about it here and here.  I met a lot of wonderful people, both bloggers and makeup artists, attended a few of the seminars and thoroughly enjoyed myself visiting all the booths of makeup companies, learning about new brands and picking items from my list.

This 5th year of THS promises to be the biggest and best with dozens of internationally renowned makeup artists and makeup exhibitors.  If you are a makeup artist, you must attend!!  THS will be hosted in NYC on May 15th and 16th.

Here is a list of a few of the artists that are going to be attending:

  • Pati Dubroff
  • Billy B.
  • Sam Fine
  • Kevin James Bennett
  • James Vincent
  • Dany Sanz
  • Danessa Myricks
  • Michael DeVellis
  • Orlando Santiago
  • Johnny Lavoy

Earth Day beauties!

Hey!

So last Friday was Earth Day, and slowly but surely, lots of cosmetic companies, big and small, have been embracing more natural and organic formulations.  So for you earth-conscious beauties out there, here are a few brands to look out for:

HAIR

  • Oyin Handmade – probably my favourite, natural haircare line for women with curly, kinky or coily hair.  I cannot live without the Burnt Sugar Pomade.  Really.  The Juices are also really good too! Still have to try their new Hair Dew.
  • Karen’s Body Beautiful – Another great line based out of my old neighbourhood of Fort Greene Brooklyn.  The Sweet Ambrosia is the go-to product.  But I am really excited for all the new products that will be coming out this year.
  • Qhemet Biologics – I think that their Amla and Olive Heavy Cream is amazing! It’s also their top seller.
  • Kinky Curly –  A very popular brand with products like Knot Today (my staple leave-in conditioner) and the Curling Custard (which I have YET to try, but summer is coming up so….).
  • Anita Grant – love from across the pond!!! And now they have a U.S. distributor – Hairrogant.  And right now they actually have a sale on the top 5 selling AG products!  I would recommend the babassu shampoo bars and the Rhassoul Deep Condish.
  • Aubrey Organics- available at Whole Foods and other retailers, I use their GPB conditioner as a protein conditioner and the Honeysuckle Rose conditioner as a deep moisturizer.
  • SheaMoisture – Love their Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo and their body butters! Available at Target and Walgreens.

Updated haircare routine

Updated haircare routine

So have have not been buying a lot of products as of late, but I’ve been loving a few items. I usually wash and condition every other week. The process is done in four sections.   I wear my hair in a protective style for one week then as a twist-out/bun for the next.  I definitely will be experimenting with more styles this year! So here’s what’s hot with me!!

  • Prepoo: Organic Coconut oil.  Just applied to my strands a few hours before washing.
  • Shampoo: Well I stopped using regular sulphate shampoo years ago, and I have been loving the Shea Moisture Organic Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo. My hair never feels dry with this product!

Two strand twists – a new protective style!

Two strand twists – a new protective style!

So here’s an update on my protective styling.  For those who don’t know, I pretty much live in protective styles because when it comes to my hair, I 1) am kinda lazy when it comes to styling, 2) like the convenience, 3) don’t like to wear my hair out when it’s cold (which is at least 75% of the year).  I wear a twisted style one week, then a twist-out bun the next, wash, repeat. Get it??  Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE buying hair products, testing them out, but I have not that creative with styling.  So I’m trying to bust out of that.

Here is my usual protective style, a two-strand cornrowed flat twist:

Karen’s Body Beautiful after-work Natural Hair Mixer

Karen’s Body Beautiful after-work Natural Hair Mixer

Hey!!!

So last Friday, I went to the KBB after-work event.  It was a great day in the Big Apple, nice weather, a taste of spring, so I was game to going.  So I trekked over to my old nabe in Brooklyn and the place was packed! People spilled out onto the sidewalk.  Lots of beautiful women, great natural hair, different textures, colours and styles.

KBB event, it was packed!!!!!

That’s always pleasing to see.  I pretty much spent the time meeting other amazing people, bloggers, YTers, and chatting about different techniques and styles.  There were some better known bloggers there like Jenell from KinkyCurlyCoilyMe, Yvonne from AfroCrownDiva, Zara from Leave In The Kinks, Milan from A Grl Can Mac, Yardley, Editor-In-Chief of The Coil Review, YTers Sweeteababy0427, Chery818, SumKindaWndrful and Taren916.
