It is the very end of 2016! The very last day! I am not going to go into how crazy this year has been. I’m going to keep it really upbeat. This is a festive New Year’s Eve party makeup tutorial that will also work for the upcoming Carnival fete season. We are officially in the Christmas period, but since Christmas night, deejays have been playing the latest soca offerings for 2017. We doh make joke with Carnival!
I decided on this look when I saw a video posted by the legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath, portraying her latest Skin Labs offerings. Cream and powder metallic and glitter eye shadows in silver, bronze, gold and copper. I did not pick any of these kits but loved the look so much for its simplicity and its impact.
Here is the look
I could not decide on the lip so I am showing you both!
I am using many of my favourite products for 2016 as well as some more recent purchases. If you don’t have the exact products that I used, pick up some great inexpensive alternatives from NYX, and ColourPop Cosmetics.
The complete video tutorial is below and I have listed all the products used.

Another year, another amazing event! The Makeup Show NYC just ended a few weeks ago and what an event it was! I love going to this! This pro-only trade show is an amazing opportunity to meet other professionals in the makeup artistry industry as well as many of the brands that have been supporting professional artists for years. There are a number of things that I loved about this event this year:
Things I loved
The amazing educational classes – this is a wealth of information and it was a great event to learn about the current and upcoming trends – not just what is popular on YouTube, but what artist are doing in editorial, bridal and SFX.
The focus on skincare – Skin is in! Without an amazing canvas/base, you won’t have an amazing finished product! Makeup does not cover everything.
New and exciting product innovation and launches – Folks out there are really doing some incredible things with makeup and tools! The next few months will be super exciting, especially when it comes to mascaras…so many to try from Ardency Inn, tarte, Senna, Charlotte Tilbury etc! Just wait to see what MUFE has coming this summer!
Embracing smaller brands – this is cool…there were a number of small entrepreneurial companies featured at TMS, who are doing their own thing to shake up the industry, proving that you don’t have to be a global conglomerate to make a difference, which leads me to my last point…
The acknowledgement of the need or the necessity of the industry to fully embrace diversity – It is 2016 and many makeup artists still don’t carry around a kit catering to global skin tones and many companies still find it difficult to create properly balanced foundations for people of colour. Thanks to James Vincent, director of Artistry, for leading an amazing panel. Also thanks to the organizers of TMS for bringing on so many, lesser known brands founded by people of colour! I was especially excited seeing The Lip Bar. More on them in a later post!
Anyway, here are some photos of the artistry, the colour and the beauty of makeup. As usual, the body painting was phenomenal! Let me know what you think! I will be talking, in future posts, about some of the new goodies that I discovered while there…..get hyped!

Today I am reviewing a product that is new to me from the Camille Rose Coconut Water line. It is the Camille Rose Style Setter Hydrating Creme Deluxe.
Camille Rose Naturals Coconut Water Style Setter Hydrating Creme Deluxe
I have heard about the Camille Rose Naturals line for a long time, but I was attracted to the idea of using coconut water for hydration. Coconut water has been used in tropical climates for years.
The Style Setter is described as having superior hydrating, thirst quenching coconut water and aloe vera juice combined with tropical butters to deeply penetrate and provide maximum moisture and shine. This is an all-natural product, with a short ingredient list that also includes coconut oil, and a number of fruit extracts. It’s a white cream that melts easily into the hands and hair without feeling greasy. It also has a light coconut scent, but a real coconut scent that is not overpowering or prominent.
The creme
I actually created a video review on this product. Check it out below, but I have some additional thoughts on the product.
This is major news! Sundial Brands (the company behind SheaMoisture and Nubian Heritage) is launching a prestige haircare line, Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture, that will be available at Sephora on March 4th! This is a big deal considering that even though the options for natural hair and those with kinky/coily/curly textures have increased dramatically over the last 5-10 years, most of the products are not considered prestige. They are not the kind of products that are considered ‘luxurious’ enough to be found at a salon or a specialty retail store (although, I don’t know why??)
Anyway, this news makes me quite happy as it brings together the legacy of Madam C.J. Walker, who is the America’s first self-made millionaire, with the modern desire to have high-quality natural-based products for persons of colour.
(All information via PR):
Sundial Brands, a leading skincare and haircare manufacturer renowned for its innovative use of high-quality, culturally authentic natural ingredients, today announced the company’s first prestige haircare launch – Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture. Building on the life, legacy and impact of the ground-breaking Madam C.J. Walker – visionary entrepreneur, philanthropist and America’s first female self-made millionaire – the four-collection, 25 SKU line launches exclusively in Sephora stores and on Sephora.com on March 4, 2016.
Serving today’s woman according to her specific hair texture needs, Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture’s product solutions contain all new formulations created with the highest quality natural ingredients – including first-to-market dual oil encapsulations – and performance-driven innovation to inspire every woman to be unapologetic in the expression of her individual beauty – whether kinky, coily, curly, wavy, or straight/heat-styled. The treatment collection is designed for all hair types to help restore and maintain health.
“Madam C.J. Walker was the first person to devise and scale a business model that addressed the haircare and beauty needs of women of color, while also challenging the myopic ideals of the beauty industry at that time,” said Richelieu Dennis, CEO of Sundial Brands. “Today, Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture is poised to challenge those same ideals in the prestige category with our revolutionary new products and cutting edge formulations that provide women with any hair texture with a new standard of beauty – their own. In partnering with Sephora, this launch represents another step forward in our rich history and continues Madam C.J. Walkers’ legacy to help every woman feel confident to embark on the life she desires.
It’s also a dream come true not just for us, but for the millions of women who have been touched by the legacy of Madam C.J. Walker and the millions more who will be inspired to reach their own levels of greatness by hearing her story. We aim to give this brand back to the world in the elevated, iconic mannerdeserving of a woman who defied the limitations of her time and accomplished what no American woman had done before – in haircare, beauty or business. That spirit of audacity, inspiration, empowerment and ingenuity still lives in women today and is reflected in every part of this brand.”
“Greatness begins with confidence. Powerful. Beautiful. You.”
