NARS Audacious Mascara and Kohliner

We are fast approaching New York Fashion Week and the upcoming season, so there are tons of new products coming out, which makes me very happy!

Over the past 2 years or so, NARS has been quietly reformulating and repackaging their entire lineup. And the results have generally been amazing! I love the sleekness and sophistication of the line!

So Francois Nars and his team have added to their Audacious line with a brand new mascara and kohliner. By the way, if you have not read my review on the Audacious Lipsticks, here you go! It is one of my favourite formulas ever!

According to NARS, this new Audacious Mascara will replace all their currently existing mascaras and they have removed them from stores and counters.

NARS Audacious Mascara

For the Audacious Mascara:

The wand, exclusively designed with over 200 molded bristles and lengthening hooks evenly grips and coats lashes from root to tip while simultaneously separating, lengthening, and amplifying with every stroke. Our first-to-market formula is long-wearing and stays soft and flexible, lending itself to maximum buildability.

This mascara is supposed to be your do-it-all-and-then-some. Lengthening,…volumizing,…separating. It is a fairly large, plastic bristle brush, with over 200 molded bristles, some of which have hooks.

The bristles

The formula is multi-faceted. It contains humectants and conditioners that allow the mascara to remain lightweight, soft, flexible, and buildable even after hours between layers, and also it is long-wearing, which helps resist smudging, flaking clumping.

So here’s what I think.

When I first opened the tube, I gave it my classic ‘cut-eye’ as the brush is quite large and it has plastic teeth. When I applied it to my lashes, it actually fit quite nicely and I could actually feel the teeth gripping my lashes as opposed to them just brushing against them. So I think that this greatly helps with the distribution of the product. There are also bristles on the tip of the brush so that you could get to those tiny inner corner lashes. The formula is a rich, black colour although its not the darkest shade that I have encountered. It is also not too thick and I was able to apply multiple layers without it getting clumpy or sticky. According to NARS, this formula is buildable over a couple of hours, i.e. you can apply 1 layer and then later on in the day you can add more coats to bump up the volume. I also wore this mascara to a double workout session and it held up great. No flaking or running under my eyes. It has some water resistance properties but not necessarily waterproof. The Audacious Mascara did a great job at adding length and volume to my lashes and I like the fact it can be applied lightly for day and heavier for a more intense look. I loved how it gripped my lashes and accentuated even the tiniest ones on my lower lashline.

With one coat

Along with this mascara, the NARS Kohliner was launched as it’s riding partner.

From PR:

Creamy and concentrated, this matte-black formula smokes out lash lines and defines waterlines with bold precision. The propel/repel design and soft, rich texture allow for an easy application that won’t skip or drag, while its unique combination of polymers help extend wear and color payoff for a long- lasting look. Buildable. Blendable. Bold.

This product, housed in a skinny retractable pencil, is super soft and a rich black colour. Great for using on the waterlines or on the lid for a smokey eye.

Audacious Mascara comes in 1 colour, black called Black Moon and costs US$26 and the NARS Kohliner comes in black as well, Minorque and costs $25.

They will be available from August 1st, at NARS boutiques and online at and from September 1st, at specialty retailers such as Sephora and

Overall Grade: A

Only drawback is the price, but really good formula and great for those of us with tiny lashes.
