The one makeup look that everyone always wants to know how to do is the smoky eye. It’s dramatic, sexy and versatile. I have created a very basic, beginner’s smoky eye using only 3 colour products. This is a quick, out-the-door look that can be used as a base and built up as needed.
Here’s the look!

A bronzey smoky eye!
The key to the smoky is blending…blend, blend and blend some more. You want a smooth transition from one colour to another without any harsh lines.
I used minimal products – Make Up For Ever Aqua Shadow Waterproof Eye Shadow Pencil in 22E, M.A.C. Feline Eye Pencil and L’Oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes mascara. That’s basically it!!

The products!
Check out my tutorial below!
- For long lasting results, apply an eye primer to your entire lid area. You could also use your concealer.
- Apply eye shadow all over your eyelid and blend into your crease. Also apply to your lower lashline. You could use any colour that you want – gunmetal, bronze, gold, green, purple. I used a midtoned bronze colour by MUFE and blended it out with my ring finger. (MUFE Aqua Shadow Waterproof Eye Shadow Pencil in 22E)
- Using a creamy black eyeliner, line your entire upper and lower lashline. I like to make the upper lashline thicker on the outer half than the inner half. I used Feline Eye Pencil from M.A.C.. Here are some great dark, smooth, creamy black liners: Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Perversion, and Milani Cosmetics Liquid Eye Liquid-Like Eye Liner in Black (a great, inexpensive drugstore brand!)
- Using your finger, cotton swab or a pencil brush, start smudging the liner upwards and outwards. Here is where you blend!! And blend! Keep reapplying the black liner as it fades. The idea is to have the darkest area be the lashline and the black colour fades into the other lid colour. I used a pencil brush, Royal & Langnickel Revolution BX-95 (the BEST pencil brush ever!!!)
- Apply lots of mascara to upper and lower lashline.
- You’re done!
This is just the basics. To intensify the look, you could add some black powder eye shadow to the lashline and smudge or you could even use a dark coloured eye shadow and blend it out!
