How To Strengthen Your Natural Hair – Aubrey Organics GPB Review

I have been natural since 2008 and I immediately began to search for products that were gentle, suitable for naturally kinky hair and made of natural ingredients. Back then, there were not a whole lot of options but I discovered the Aubrey Organics GPB Balancing Protein Conditioner at Whole Foods.

But why do a protein treatment? Hair is made up of chains of proteins. And the chains are made of up layers. The top layer of hair reminds me of fish scales. When they all overlap properly the hair feels smooth and it efficiently retains its moisture. When we manipulate our hair by combing, braiding, dyeing etc., the outer layer can become damaged and the ends can split. The outer layer can lose its ‘scales’ and there will be breaks or gaps on the surface of the strand. Adding a protein treatment can repair and fill in some of the spaces or holes in the hair.

Aubrey Organics GPB Conditioner – General Product Details

Aubrey Organics’ GPB Balancing Protein Conditioner is a pale yellow, thick creamy product with a slight pearlescent sheen. Very mildly scented. Naturally sourced ingredients and it is vegetarian (not vegan), gluten-free, paraben-free, phthalate-free and cruelty-free. It also contains 70% organic ingredients.

The most noticeable ingredients are two proteins and a hydrator. Glycoproteins and milk proteins are the strengthening and repairing factors and aloe vera provides hydration.

Comes in a classic plastic squeeze bottle that is recyclable. I have no problems with dispensing the product.

So last Friday was Earth Day, and slowly but surely, lots of cosmetic companies, big and small, have been embracing more natural and organic formulations. So for you earth-conscious beauties out there, here are a few brands to look out for:

HAIR

Oyin Handmade – probably my favourite, natural haircare line for women with curly, kinky or coily hair. I cannot live without the Burnt Sugar Pomade. Really. The Juices are also really good too! Still have to try their new Hair Dew.
Karen’s Body Beautiful – Another great line based out of my old neighbourhood of Fort Greene Brooklyn. The Sweet Ambrosia is the go-to product. But I am really excited for all the new products that will be coming out this year.
Qhemet Biologics – I think that their Amla and Olive Heavy Cream is amazing! It’s also their top seller.
Kinky Curly – A very popular brand with products like Knot Today (my staple leave-in conditioner) and the Curling Custard (which I have YET to try, but summer is coming up so….).
Anita Grant – love from across the pond!!! And now they have a U.S. distributor – Hairrogant. And right now they actually have a sale on the top 5 selling AG products! I would recommend the babassu shampoo bars and the Rhassoul Deep Condish.
Aubrey Organics– available at Whole Foods and other retailers, I use their GPB conditioner as a protein conditioner and the Honeysuckle Rose conditioner as a deep moisturizer.
SheaMoisture – Love their Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo and their body butters! Available at Target and Walgreens.

Updated haircare routine

So have have not been buying a lot of products as of late, but I’ve been loving a few items. I usually wash and condition every other week. The process is done in four sections. I wear my hair in a protective style for one week then as a twist-out/bun for the next. I definitely will be experimenting with more styles this year! So here’s what’s hot with me!!

Prepoo: Organic Coconut oil. Just applied to my strands a few hours before washing.
Shampoo: Well I stopped using regular sulphate shampoo years ago, and I have been loving the Shea Moisture Organic Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo. My hair never feels dry with this product!
