Maybelline The Burgundy Bar Review: The hottest drugstore palette is here!

Maybelline The Burgundy Bar Review: The palette is finally stateside! It was released in Europe a few months ago and people have been raving! It has been a long time since I have heard this much hype over a drugstore palette. This is a continuation of “The Bar” line that Maybelline and it has arrived in the US. I am not sure if they had originally planned to have a U.S. release, but a few weeks ago, while browsing Twitter, I saw that Maybelline was directly linking to and selling this palette on Amazon! So, that surprised me a little bit and I was not aware of this. I had to get a few other items so the palette was added to my shopping cart.

This is a 12-shade palette – 10 shimmers and 2 matte. Most of the shades are champagnes, taupes and brown neutrals with a few red-toned shades. My favourite shade in the palette is the deep, rich burgundy one on the second row. The shimmer shades definitely have reflects, but none of them are glittery. There are only two matte shades, a medium taupe and a cool dark brown. According to Maybelline, the palette gives 13 different looks and it is broken up into 3 quads, or 4 trios or 5 duos. The ways the colours are arranged, adjacent colours in the quad trio or duo are meant to be used together.

How to: Easy Glossy Eyes, Monochromatic Look on Dark Skin

I think we are finally moving away from the ultra matte trend and we are stepping into softer, more luminescent looks. From magazines to the runways, on the cheekbones, the lids and even on the cupid’s bow, we are seeing the emphasis on sheen on these areas. This is what I love about makeup. Experimenting with colour and different textures. And you can change your mind whenever you want! So that’s what this look is going to be: glossy eyes!

This is one of the looks that inspired me.

I am also adding another trend, the monochromatic look. Typically I see it with lighter colours, but I wanted to show you that you can achieve this with pretty much any colour and in this look, I used a burgundy shade. This look will work on any skintone and you can wear this pretty much all year-round.

So…..the glossiness…..There are many products that can use to achieve this effect. The most popular option is using a lip gloss. I actually chose to use a blend of natural oils. There some companies coming out now with ‘eye gels’ or ‘eye glosses’, like NYX and M.A.C., specially made for this look. Regardless of what you use, keep in mind that any one of products will eventually break down the eye shadows on the lid and will lead to creasing.

Anyway, nuff talk. Here’s the look!

How to get a beautiful ‘No-makeup’ Look on Dark Skin

No-makeup makeup on dark skin

Hey!

There is a lot a makeup out there. Just browsing through Pinterest or IG, and you will see all kinds of amazing (and not so great) makeup looks and tutorials. But sometimes, you don’t want all of that. You may have 5 minutes in the morning or you are just going to run errands. Or you are not in the mood for a cut-crease, lashes and contouring. So….this is my ‘no-makeup’ makeup look.

This look is a great, everyday, best version of you look. It is actually what I wear to work. Pick your favourite neutral shades and just apply foundation or concealer as needed. This is a simple, fuss-free look. Don’t think too much about it. And this a really good starting point if you decide to amp up the look a little bit with a brighter lip or a more intense eye.

Here’s my tutorial and all of the products that I used are listed below.

Festive New Year’s Eve party makeup on dark skin!

New Year's Eve party makeup tutorial main

It is the very end of 2016! The very last day! I am not going to go into how crazy this year has been. I’m going to keep it really upbeat.  This is a festive New Year’s Eve party makeup tutorial that will also work for the upcoming Carnival fete season.  We are officially in the Christmas period, but since Christmas night, deejays have been playing the latest soca offerings for 2017.  We doh make joke with Carnival!

I decided on this look when I saw a video posted by the legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath, portraying her latest Skin Labs offerings.  Cream and powder metallic and glitter eye shadows in silver, bronze, gold and copper.  I did not pick any of these kits but loved the look so much for its simplicity and its impact.

Here is the look

4 Best Summer Cream Nail Polishes for Brown Skin – Pastels

It’s finally summer! And the weather here has been really A+! I already have a number of events lined up. For the next 3 months, my weekends are going to be pretty full. So of course, I am living in open-toed shoes, I am taking full advantage of the warmth. Hence, I have to make sure that my nails are always polished, both hands and feet. I own a lot of nail polish…like a lot. So I give myself manis and pedis once a week, and I never wear the same colour on my fingers and toes. I love all textures of polish, but there is something about crème nail polishes, especially on dark skin that I love. I think that there is no distraction from shimmers and glitters, so that it is all about the colour. So I am drawn to really bold brights, or intense light colours. It’s all about the contrast with the skin colour. Here are the four best summer nail polishes, in pastel cremes, that will pop on women of colour.  And better yet, these are all vegan friendly! These are must-have.

Side note: Yes there are a lot of Mischo Beauty polishes here. These were all bought by me, and this post is not sponsored. I just love the brand.
