LOTD: Summer pink and Met Gala-inspired makeup!

Hey all!

Earlier this year, fellow Caribeña, Afro-Latina and model Joan Smalls gave all kinds of face with this look for the Met Gala.

I was immediately smitten! Very dramatic and smokey for evening, but quite bright and definitely a great look for warm-weather evening. Joan is a brand ambassador for Estée Lauder, so her makeup artist used all Lauder products, but I used what I had available, mixing and matching when needed. If you love a look, you certainly don’t need to go out and buy the exact makeup to make it work. I also took the opportunity to try out the brand new, 4K/UHD compatible foundation from Make Up For Ever. I will be writing a separate review on this one. I also got some new shadows recently, including my first taste at the Makeup Geek eye shadows. I have been a fan of Marlena for years and I am really happy to see her being so successful with her line. She is very smart and knowledgeable and I love that she has a serious love for makeup and even though she has her own line, she is all about great makeup from any brand.

Anyways…here is what I came up with.

It is actually quite a simple look, just lots and lots of blending to get that swept look. All details of the products used are below and remember to substitute your own products when needed.

When your hair hands you lemons….make lemonade!

Hey!

I recently went to The Makeup Show NYC and I wanted to try a new hairstyle. You know I live in twists and this time I wanted to try Bantu knots. I was looking for a looser, fluffier texture.

Actually Bantu knots are not new to me. Wore them a bit growing up along with canerow. Anyway, I have not tried this in a long time and this is the result.

My Bantu knot out!

Not bad, but not the best. I was looking for a smoother finish, but I love the volume I got. This was actually the second time that I attempted this. The first time was on damp hair, and even though I left the knots in overnight, it still was not dry and everything fell. The next time, I did about 10-11 knots on dry hair.

A different angle…

Check out that liner!

I will be working on perfecting this. I probably need to do this on stretched hair for smoother results.

Any suggestions or ideas?

.

NARS recently released a collection of 40 lipsticks in honour of its 20th Anniversary. New packaging and rich, creamy colour. The collection is currently available and I picked up one of them. I love deep shades for the colder months and Liv fits the bill! Smooth on the lips and lasts a good many hours.

The musical “The Lion King” teams up with Inglot Cosmetics!

I recently attended the launch of the Lion King-inspired collection by Inglot Cosmetics. Held at the Inglot Studio in Chelsea Market, I was able to meet a few of the cast members from the highest-grossing Broadway show in New York history!

Savannah Sunset by Inglot. Inspired by The Lion King!

I met one of the performers from The Lion King! This is Bonita, who plays the Hyena!! Check out that red lip!

If you have the opportunity, you should definitely go see the show, it is absolutely worth it! I see why it is one of the most popular musicals in the world.

From PR:

Inglot Cosmetics announces a stunning collaboration with Disney’s The Lion King, one of Broadway’s most beloved Tony-Award winning musicals. Inglot and The Lion King will come together through their shared passion for richness and vibrancy of color reminiscent of African Savannah sunsets and starry nighttime skies.

The Savannah Sunset collection consists of one single matte eye shadow, one single shimmer eye shadow, one eye shadow trio, one blush, one lipstick palette, one nail lacquer, a felt tip liner and a mascara. It is currently available at Inglot boutiques around the world as well as online at inglotusa.com. As a special bonus, audience members who bring their ticket to Inglot Times Square and like the Inglot Fan page on Facebook will received a 20% discount on their purchase or a free makeover!

So here are some pictures, swatches of the collection, as well as quick look I did with most of the products that I received. Quickly, this is a beautiful collection, very warm and suitable for all skintones. I also think that this palette would work all year round, it’s both very summery and quite appropriate for the autumn. The colours are pigmented and easy to blend. A little ‘dusty’, but not too bad. The eyeliner is also pretty good and it quite easy to make a quick cat eye and it dries down to a semi-glossy finish. The only product that I did not like was the Secret Volume Mascara. It’s one of those plastic-bristle brushes and while it was good at separating the lashes, it did nothing to volumize.

Anyway, check out the collection below!

LOTD inspired by Viola Davis’ character on HTGAWM and my first autumn look!

[twitter-follow screen_name=’NoireTropicalB’]

Have you folks been watching “How To Get Away With Murder” starring Viola Davis? It’s another creation of Shonda Rhimes! At least in the US, Thursdays have officially become “Shonda Thursdays”. I feel sorry for the other networks. Shondaland has taken over!

Anyway, I loved the makeup that was done on Viola Davis’ character, Professor Annalise Keating. I loved that fact that they did not play it too safe, it was rather smokey, for a middle aged woman working as a professor and a practicing lawyer. I think sometimes society sets way too many rules based on arbitrariness. If you like it, wear it!

I was inspired by the look, which was basically a smokey eye with a pop of gold/copper in the centre of the lid. I did a more toned down version, a light brown smokey eye with a pop of gold in the centre.

LOTD

Here’s the main products that I used:

  • NARS Dual Intensity Eyeshadow in Himalia – a gorgeous very shimmery light gold on the centre of the lid.
  • MAC Matte2 eyeshadow in Signed, Sealed – a dark matte dark chocolate in the crease and outer eye lid.
  • Senna Cosmetics Glow Eye Color in Cordovan – described as a ‘bronzed wine’ to the inner and outer upper lid.
  • NARS Eye Paint in Black Valley – matte black gel liner, no wing (shock!)
  • L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara in Carbon Black – black mascara
  • Just some facial oil and Embryolisse Lait Crème Concentre on my skin.

What do you think of the show??
