I’m talking about the SheaMoisture Organic Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo with Sea Kelp, Argan Oil & Shea Butter for dry, damaged hair. I have been using this shampoo for about a year now. AND I LOVE IT!!!!!
While I was a relaxed girl, as a matter of fact, I have always have problems with shampoos drying my hair and scalp out. I would often feel like my scalp was tightening and pulling away from my hair. Fast forward to last year as a natural. Now my hair is growing and kinky and my number 1 goal is to prevent my hair from completely drying out when I wash it and to still effectively cleanse it. I have tried other natural shampoos and many of them while they work, they also did not suds enough for my liking. A little bit of sudsing or foaming is actually good because it helps trap and remove oil and dirt. It’s when there is excessive bubble action when the skin and hair feels dry. I also avoid traditional shampoos with certain sulphates and their derivatives like sodium lauryl sulphate, ammonium laureth sulphate etc. This is one of the moves that I have made that has totally changed the health and condition of my hair. I stick to the gentle cleansers that can remove water-soluble products.
Enter the SheaMoisture shampoo. This is from a company that makes products committed to using all-natural, certified organic products, free of common irritants like, parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, sulphates and animal products. This makes it cruelty-free, biodegradable and vegan friendly. There are very few ingredients, which I love! The main ingredient is water and the very next one is decyl glucoside derived from sugar beets. Chemistry lesson alert! Skip to the next section to avoid the technical stuff!
Decyl Glucoside is a mild surfactant that is plant derived and suitable for those with sensitive skin and it is biodegradable (safe for the environment). This allows it to remove oil without stripping. Think of a surfactant as cleanser that each molecule is shaped like a lollipop. The round end of the lollipop is hydrophilic or water-loving and attracted to things that are attracted to water. The stick or tail end is hydrophobic (not water-loving) and is attracted to things that are oil-loving. When you wash your hair, the massaging of the scalp helps lift the dirt and oil and the surfactant then traps the oil in a bubble and when you rinse, these bubbles are washed away leaving the hair clean.
The Moisture Retention Shampoo also contains: Shea Butter (deeply moisturizes, repairs damage), aloe vera leaf juice (attracts moisture and provides some slip), argan oil (restores shine and rebuilds hair elasticity), panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5), Rosemary Extract, Sea Kelp Extract (contains trace minerals that detoxify hair follicles of impurities and residue), Vitamin E, Honeysuckle Extract, Japonese Honeysuckle Extract. That’s it!!
This shampoo looks like melted raw shea butter and has a nutty smell, which took some getting used too. It was the only thing that I did not care for. It is very creamy, and has a pearlescent finish. It suds just like a regular shampoo and the best thing is that my scalp feels clean and my hair is super soft and not squeaky. I assume that this can be used on a daily basis and does not contribute extra tangles, which is another plus! One thing to note: if you use products that contain cones (like dimethicone etc) or other products that are not readily water soluble/removable, this won’t thoroughly clean your hair. You will need a stronger cleanser.
This is available from Target, Walgreens and Duane Reades nationwide. It is also available online at those retailers. A 12oz. bottle is going to cost about $9.99, but until Sunday November 27, there is a pop-up booth at Bryant Park on 41st and 6th in Manhattan where there is a 3 for $20 deal. Jump on it!!!!
Overall Grade: A+ This makes washing a little bit easier!
Laters!

Thank you so much for this post! Very informative. I love the ingredients and I have to cosign on the sodium lauryl sulphate. So many people don’t realize how bad it is for your hair. Really looking forward to trying this product out. P.S. the chem lesson’s a keeper
Thanks for the feedback! I will try to stick in a little chemistry whenever I get a chance. As for SLSs etc., cutting it out was the single best thing that I ever did for my hair. I heard the other lines are good too.
