When Lori Taylor tweeted last December about some new lipsticks that Smashbox was bringing out, I was intrigued!  I was eager to feed my newfound passion for lipsticks.  Fast forward to the new year and I couldn’t wait to place my order!

Smashbox’s Be Legendary Lipsticks are new for Spring/Summer 2012.

Smashbox's Be Legendary Lipstick

There are 22 shades, from neutrals to brights to deeps and they also come into a variety of textures from mattes to creams to shimmers.  Smashbox also added shea butter and antioxidants Vitamin A and E for the creamy lipsticks.  The shea butter adds creaminess and moisturization properties and the essential vitamins act as antioxidants and therefore can protect the lips.  The matte shades also contains Vitamins A and E.

In general, really loved the quality of these lipsticks.  They come in sleek, black, semi-matte, oblong cases.

There are 0.1 oz of product which is standard for lipsticks.  I have only tried the creamy lipsticks and I have found that they are very creamy and they apply very smoothly.  They leave a shiny finish that is not sticky or glossy.  They didn’t drag on my lips either.  They don’t really have a disearnable smell or taste.  The colour is saturated without being completely opaque, so that if you want, you could build up the intensity.  When I tested the lipsticks, I got about 5 hours before getting significant wear, which included me eating a light snack.

So I bought 3 shades, the first being Chestnut.

Chestnut

Chestnut is a midtone reddish brown.  Quite warm.  It reminds me of terracotta tiles.  The texture is very smooth and creamy.  It also has no shimmer. This is a really good neutral/natural colour for those with tan, olive or darker skintones (Latina/Middle Eastern,Asian, Black).  This is an everyday colour for me.  Great for work or for days when I want to keep my makeup super simple or I have dramatic eyes.  For those with lighter skintones, this may look a little muddy on those with very cool skin as it reads quite warm.

The next colour up is Vivid Violet.

Ah not going to lie, I was real excited for this colour when it came, and it is a gorgeous colour!!! It is really vivid without it being neon.  A stunning red-violet colour with very fine red and blue micropearl.  Just enough shimmer to add some dimension.  I loved this.  Very similar to M.A.C.’s Rebel and MUFE’s N28, but Vivid Violet is slightly warmer than Rebel with some shimmer.  Again the texture is very creamy and the finish is shiny.  I think with will look great on all skintones, being bright enough to show up on darker skin.

Lastly I bought Black Plum.

Another gorgeous colour!! A dark, wine colour with reddish micropearl.  At first I thought that this would come off as vampy but the shiny finish and the micropearl make it less dark and it allows the colour to be seen even on my dark lips.  This is a great choice for women of colour.  It also works well for those with paler skin.

I also received Primrose from PR.

This is a light, rosy pink colour.  It’s cool toned and would be a great pinky nude for lighter skin.  There is no shimmer in this one and it, again, has a shiny finish.  This is a nice colour, but for my skintone, I would have to pair it with a darker lipliner like NYX’s Purple Rain or M.A.C.’s Currant.

I really loved these new lipsticks.  Great formula and a wide colour range.  I am really planning on picking up just about every colour.  I have no complaints…pick at least one of these up.  There is a colour for everyone.  They retail for US$19 online at Smashbox or at Sephora.

I wore two of these colours to NYFW recently.
